Almost seven in 10 women in Italy,
67.3%, are afraid when they go home in the evening or at night,
research institute Censis said in a new report on Wednesday.
It said 81.8% of women here believe that walking the streets has
become more dangerous in the last five years, compared to 75.8%
for Italians of both sexes.
The 'Safety Outside the Home' report said several crimes
predominantly committed against women were on the rise.
These include cases of sexual violence, which totalled 6,587 in
2024 for an increase of 34.9% over the last five years.
The report said 25.6% of the women surveyed said they had
suffered at least one sexual assault, 23.1% a mugging or a
pickpocketing and 29.5% had been followed by a stranger.
