Some 40 people have been placed under
investigation in a graft and embezzlement case involving ferry
company Tirrenia, including magistrates, judicial sources said
Monday.
The suspects, including also members of the
police force and officials from various prefectures, are being
investigated as part of a new branch of the investigation by the
Genoa prosecutor's office into Tirrenia-Compagnia italiana di
Navigazione, which led to the seizure of three ferries.
The prosecutor's office hypothesizes the
crime of corruption: the officials allegedly traveled aboard the
company's ships for free with 'gold' cards provided by the
company.
In another branch of the probe, one concerning alleged fraud in
public supplies and which led to the seizure of 64 million euros
from the company, the first questioning before the investigating
judge of the 13 people involved will begin on Wednesday. Public
prosecutor Walter Cotugno has requested house arrest for two
people and 11 bans.
