Under the title '80 years, 80 destinies', the annual commemoration of the victims of the Ustaša concentration camp in Jasenovac, established by the 'Independent State of Croatia' during the Second World War, took place today. An estimated 80,000 people lost their lives in it, mainly Serbs, followed by Jews, Roma, Muslims and political opponents of the regime.
The Italian Embassy reported in a note that the ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic Zoran Milanović, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković, numerous members of the Croatian government and parliament, and representatives of local and regional governments. Like other representatives of the diplomatic corps, the Ambassador of Italy to Croatia, Paolo Trichilo, also paid his respects to the victims, depositing a flower at the monument dedicated to the victims, as per protocol. There were no official speeches at the commemoration, but readings of letters by prisoners and prayers by representatives of the Orthodox and Catholic churches, as well as the Muslim and Jewish religions.
