Italy is calling for a "sustainable
ceasefire" in Gaza, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio
Tajani told the Lower House on Tuesday, reiterating the
assertion that Israel's war against Hamas following the October
7 massacres is causing too many Palestinian civilian victims.
"It is essential to achieve a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza at
the political- diplomatic level," Tajani said.
"This is also needed to ease regional tensions. Italy calls for
a prolonged and lasting pause in hostilities, leading to a
sustainable ceasefire, as also called for by UN Security Council
Resolutions 2712 and 2720".
He added that last week's massacre of Palestinians at an aid
convoy in Gaza City had "intensified efforts to reach a
ceasefire as soon as possible.
"We have asked Israel to rigorously ascertain the dynamics of
the events and responsibility," he added, amid reports Israeli
forces fired on people.
The Israeli military has accused the Palestinians of being
responsible for a mass crush.
"We learned of last Thursday's massacre in Gaza with dismay,"
Tajani said.
"A massacre of defenceless civilians, which unfortunately
complicated the ongoing negotiations to reach a truce.
"No one can erase the events of October 7. It was the ruthless
Jew hunt unleashed by Hamas to trigger the conflict.
"But there are too many Palestinian victims who have nothing to
do with the terrorists."
