Italy may air drop aid into
desperately hungry Gaza as part of its new Levante mission to
assist the civilian population in the Strip facing famine after
Israel's campaign after the October 7 Hamas attacks, Defence
Minister Guido Crosetto said Tuesday.
As part of the Levante mission, approved by Parliament earlier
in the day, "the possibility of launching 'air drop' activities
to deliver humanitarian material to the Gaza Strip is also being
explored, as is the activation of the multinational 'Maritime
Aid to Gaza' initiative to provide for the opening of a maritime
corridor for the transport of humanitarian aid"., the minister
told MPs.
Crosetto expressed "satisfaction at the approval of the two new
missions: in addition to the Levante, Aspides in the Red Sea"
(to protect Israel-linked shipping from Houthi rebel attacks).
