CEO Giuseppe Marotta said Monday that
Inter were currently top of Serie A because they deserve to be
there, and not thanks to favours from referees, amid a row over
the decision not to disallow the team's winning goal in their
2-1 victory over Hellas Verona on Saturday.
Replays showed that Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni elbowed
Verona's Ondrej Duda in the face in the build-up to Davide
Frattesi's decisive stoppage-time goal.
But the referee and the VAR allowed the goal to stand, prompting
Verona Director of Sport Sean Sogliano to say Hellas had been
the victim of an injustice and the decision was not a mistake
but an act of "disrespect".
On Monday Marotta said Inter were "deservedly first in Serie A.
"Statistics help you to objectively evaluate the facts and they
say that we are at the top of the table with authority," he
added.
When asked about the decision on Frattesi's goal, he said that
"it's part of the game.
"I'm not here to list the mistakes that harmed us. It's not my
way or Inter's way," he said..
"In the end the best team will win from all points of view, we
cannot and should not talk about favouritism".
