President Sergio Mattarella on Friday
highlighted the need to ensure fair wages, fighting labour
exploitation including a gangmaster system which he said has
reached an unacceptable level of illegality.
"Fair wages must be ensured, forcefully fighting forms of
exploitation which reach in the gangmaster system an
unacceptable peak of illegality", Mattarella said in a message
to the president of the Italian farmers' confederation CIA,
Cristiano Fini.
In the message, Mattarella also said innovative agricultural
productions could help repopulate internal and mountain areas.
"Innovative productions can give an occasion of employment to
the young", he said.
Earlier this year, Pensions and Social Security Agency INPS,
Carabinieri police and labour inspectors carried out a joint
nationwide operation to crack down on the gangmaster system in
the agricultural sector, discovering that 56.9% of workers
employed by the farms surveyed were not regularly hired.
