Members of the centre-left opposition
in the Lower House on Monday urged Premier Giorgia Meloni to
immediately report to Parliament on the case of Libyan general
Osama Almasri.
The leader of the populist Five-Star Movement (M5S), ex-premier
Giuseppe Conte, Italian Left (SI) leader Nicola Fratoianni of
the Green-Left Alliance (AVS), Chiara Braga of the Democratic
Party (PD), the largest member of the opposition, as well as
centrist Italia Viva (IV) MP Roberto Giachetti and Benedetto
Della Vedova of +Europa made the request at the beginning of the
House's session.
Addressing the House, Conte said Meloni needed to report to
Parliament to "explain to Italians the real version of the
Almasri case".
"Meloni must clarify to the country why she, as a woman, mother,
a Christian allowed a criminal who is even accused of raping
children aged 5 the honour of a state flight to avoid
international justice", he said of Almasri, who was wanted for
crimes against humanity and war crimes by the International
Criminal Court and arrested in Italy last month, released on a
technicality two days later and flown back to Tripoli aboard an
Italian secret service plane.
Fratoianni also urged Meloni to report to Parliament "to answer
questions which she can't continue to flee".
