A new earthquake of magnitude 3.9 in
the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera rocked the Naples area
Saturday.
The quake, which struck at 13:32 on Saturday, was reported after
an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 on Thursday, the biggest in the
area for 40 years along with one of the same magnitude that hit
it in May last year.
The Campi Flegrei area, also known the Phlegrean Fields in
English, is currently being affected by bradyseism, or ground
uplift, and there have been a series of earthquakes over the
last year.
Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has appointed a special
commissioner for the Campi Flegrei area to take care of
risk-prevention measures.
The minister has complained about how urban development had been
allowed in the volcanic area over the decades.
