Deputy Premier and Transport Minister
Matteo Salvini on Saturday said the only tariffs that damaged
entire sectors in Italy and in Europe were imposed by Brussels,
speaking at an event organized in Ancona by the right-wing
League party he leads.
Speaking about United States President Donald Trump's
pre-announced tariffs on European goods, Salvini said it is
"necessary to work to avoid damages to the Italian economy by
speaking directly to Trump and the United States, not through
(French President Emmanuel) Macron or (European Commission
President Ursula) von der Leyen".
"We have understood that Trump uses the threat of tariffs to
reach economic and commercial agreements, he did this with
others.
"We must also work directly with him", Salvini noted.
"I remind you that, as of today, Trump has threatened tariffs -
the only huge tariff that has put entire business sectors in
Italy and in Europe on their knees was imposed by Brussels",
said Salvini.
