A 26-year-old worker has died after
suffering severe burns on May 10 in an accident at the AST
steelworks in the Umbria city of Terni, union and healthcare
sources told ANSA on Sunday.
The youth, who suffered severe burns due to an accident while he
was transporting steel slags, died after a six-day-long
hospitalization at Rome's Sant'Eugenio Hospital, the sources
added.
Sunday's was the umpteenth fatal accident in a long spate of
workplace accidental deaths in Italy.
National labour accidents and occupational illness agency INAIL
said last month that the number of fatal work-related accidents
had increased to 797 in 2024 compared to the 790 recorded in
2023.
The increase in work-related deaths was mainly recorded in the
industrial sector and in services , up to 669 from 686, INAL
reported.
The latest multiple tragedy came last December when five men
were killed by a blast at an Eni fuels depot near Florence.
Meanwhile there has been a steady stream of almost daily
individual deaths.
