US President Donald Trump had a "very
productive" meeting with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in St
Peter's Basilica before Pope Francis' funeral on Saturday, the
White House said.
The Ukrainian president went further, saying the encounter could
take on historic proportions.
"A good meeting, we had time to discuss a lot face to face,"
Zelensky said via telegram.
"We hope that everything said will have an outcome: protecting
the lives of our people, a complete and unconditional ceasefire.
A reliable and lasting peace that prevents a recurrence of war.
"A highly symbolic meeting that could become historic if
congruent results are achieved. Thank you, President Trump!".
RBC-Ukraine said a second meeting in Rome between Trump and
Zelensky that had been talked about did not happened because the
US president was scheduled to leave immediately after Francis'
funeral.
According to the report, "all the main things were discussed"
anyway in the meeting before the funeral.
Zelensky also had a four-way meeting with Trump, French
President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir
Starmer in the sidelines of the funeral and subsequently had a
bilateral with Macron.
