A majority of Italian want a new pope like the late Francis, an opinion survey said Friday.
For the majority of Italian voters, the nationality of the new Pope is indifferent, even if the first option is still in favor of a Pope from Italy, said the Izi poll.
What clearly prevails is the finding that most Italians want continuity with the pontificate of Francis, said the survey on the theme "The new Pope" carried out by Izi, an economic and political analysis and evaluation company and presented Friday morning during the program l'Aria che Tira hosted by David Parenzo on La 7.
The vast majority of voters, over 74% ,would like the new Pope to be in continuity with the late Argentine pontiff who led a pontificate defined as "progressive" by 77% of those interviewed.
The top ten themes to be promoted by the new Pope include commitments to peace, the fight against poverty and a no to rearmament.
The choice of an Italian Pope remains the first option for the voters interviewed, even if the majority, 60%, declare themselves indifferent to nationality.
The highest percentages are recorded among center-right voters, almost 45%, while for the opposition the preference for an Italian Pontiff is just under 32%. "The two most important indications that emerge from our survey are the request for a Pope in continuity with Francis and the irrelevance of nationality. The strong bipartisan appreciation for the commitment made by Francis towards peace emerges, shared by Catholics and non-Catholics, by voters of the government and the opposition", explained Giacomo Spaini, president and CEO of Izi.
The survey was conducted following the mixed Cami-Cawi method during interviews conducted between April 29 and 30 among the adult population resident in Italy.
