South Korean conductor Myung-Whun
Chung will succeed Riccardo Chailly when the Italian conductor's
contract with La Scala ends in 2026, the board of the iconic
Milanese opera house said Monday upholding unanimously a
proposal from superintendent Fortunato Ortombina.
Chung, who like Chailly is 72, will lead La Scala until 2020,
the board said.
Myung-Whun Chung's long and outstanding musical career is marked
by his appointment as Direttore Emeritus at Filarmonica della
Scala in Milano since 2023, the first ever in their history;
Principal Guest Conductor of Dresden Staatskapelle, also the
first ever in their history; Honorary Music Director at Tokyo
Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio
France in Paris and his recent appointment as Artistic Director
at the new Busan Opera and Concert Hall in South Korea.
Maestro Chung also holds titles as Music Director at the
Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor
of Teatro Comunale of Florence, Principal Conductor of the
Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome
and Music Director of the Opéra de Paris-Bastille. Throughout
his career, Maestro Chung has conducted some of the world's
leading orchestras in Europe, Asia and the USA.
