Ex premier Giuseppe Conte and former
health minister Roberto Speranza are to be questioned by the
tribunal of ministers in Brescia on May 10 in relation to a
probe into the handing of the early stages of the Covid-19
pandemic in the province of Bergamo in February 2020.
Conte and Speranza are among 19 people under investigation on
suspicion of
negligently causing an epidemic amid claims that over 4,000
deaths could have been saved if the initial red zone had been
extended from Bergamo to outlying areas including another two
towns.
Lombardy Governor Attilio Fontana, former Lombardy councillor
Giulio Gallera, president of the Higher Health Institute,
Italy's main centre for research, control and
technical-scientific advice on public health, Silvio Brusaferro,
and president of the Higher Health Council, the health
ministry's senior advisory body, Franco Locatelli, are also
being probed.
On March 3 prosecutors in Bergamo responsible for the
investigation sent the case files concerning the former premier
Conte and former minister Speranza to
their counterparts in Brescia for transmission to the tribunal
of ministers for evaluation and authorization to proceed.
