A 52-year-old prisoner killed himself
at Frosinone Prison between Rome and Naples Wednesday raising
the suicide toll in Italian jails this year to 13.
One prison officer has also taken his own life since January 1.
"Prison is increasingly a place of death and desperation but
those who have political and administrative responsibility seem
indifferent and all this can no longer be tolerated", said the
Lazio inmates ombudsman, Stefano Anastasia.
Chronic overcrowding and poor conditions have been linked to the
rising jail suicide rate.
