It is not the earthquake directly
that kills people but the house that collapses onto them,
Italian Civil Protection chief Fabio Ciciliano said Thursday
saying that residents in the Naples area, which was hit by a
concerning but not very damaging quake early Thursday, would be
helped with ongoing assessments of the safety and
quake-proofness of their buildings.
It's not the earthquake that kills, but the house we live in",
he said, reiterating that the major "concern" regarding the
Campi Flegrei or Phlegraean Fields area is the "urbanization"
and "the quality" of the buildings.
Ciciliano added that citizens can already request "free
inspections by technicians", to verify the vulnerability of
homes, which is different from habitability.
"We have already
started a study on the buildings of the Phlegraean Fields, an
important work that will help citizens understand the level of
quality and safety of the homes they live in" he adds
