A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Department of Education of the Government of Western Australia and the Consulate of Italy in Perth to promote the teaching of Italian language and culture in schools of all levels in the State, where more than 165,000 people of Italian origin reside. The five-year agreement aims to consolidate the role of the Italian language as an integral part of Western Australia's education system, fostering among other things the quality of learning, professional training of teachers, and collaboration at the university level.
"This Memorandum goes beyond mere language promotion," said Consul of Italy in Perth, Sergio Federico Nicolaci. "It strengthens the deep cultural ties and friendship between Italy and Western Australia, recognises the importance of the Italian heritage and encourages the teaching of our language as a privileged tool not only to access an immense historical and cultural heritage, but also to promote an ever-increasing and fruitful bilateral collaboration in all fields."
The agreement is part of the 12th Executive Programme of cultural cooperation between Italy and Australia, signed in Rome on 8 May 2015, aimed at promoting growing bilateral relations in the artistic, educational and cultural fields.
