The Ambassador of Italy to Pakistan Marilina Armellin, accompanied by her Consort, Dr. Domenico Polloni, and First Secretary, Dr. Augusto Palmieri, visited the museum of Taxila, a Unesco World Heritage site. Taxila was one of the capitals of the ancient civilisation of the Indus Valley, the Gandhāra civilisation, and has experienced Iranian and Hellenic contaminations throughout its history, following the conquests of Alexander the Great.
Taxila was also an important centre for the expansion of Buddhism. Many works in the museum bear witness to the cult of Buddha, depicted in traditional poses in Hellenistic fashion. Excavations, started early last century by the British archaeologist John Hubert Marshall, are still ongoing. Thanks also to the use of innovative techniques, the Taxila site continues to yield unique evidence of an ancient civilisation that was prosperous and well integrated into the trade networks of the time.
