The first edition of the Sunflower European Tour will start from Lisbon on June 2, a two-wheel event whose route - over 6,000 km by bicycle through Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Greece - will end on July 16 in Athens.
The Sunflower European Tour is the European version of the Girasoli Tour 2021, a 3,500-kilometre bicycle journey across Italy conceived and realised by Massimiliano Porcelli with his Utopia 2000, an Italian social cooperative whose aim is to promote a timeless and environmentally friendly means of transport such as the bicycle, while at the same time creating valuable connections at Italian and European level with some of the main players in the social economy. The aim of the project is in fact to enhance the social economy as an economic driver.
On his long journey from Lisbon to Athens, Porcelli will be followed not only by local cyclists who wish to join him, but also by a team of assistants and a film crew that will make a documentary, as was already the case for the 2021 tour with the film 'Tutto quello che sarà', by director Renato Chiocca. Lisbon was symbolically chosen as the starting point - in particular the Belém district, the one from which the navigators, protagonists of the Portuguese geographical discoveries, set sail - and the date of 2 June, Italian Republic Day. In fact, the event has the support of the Italian Embassy in Portugal.
