The Italian Embassy in London, in collaboration with Lendlease and the Italian Trade Agency, celebrated Italian Design Day with an in-depth discussion on the theme 'Urban Regeneration: Design for a Better Life', which is closely linked to the 24th International Exhibition of the Milan Triennale ('Inequalities').
Ambassador Inigo Lambertini emphasised the key role of design in addressing the major social and economic challenges of our time: 'Design,' he noted, 'is a powerful tool for innovation and social change. Cities, the fulcrum of economic and social development, are also the place where inequalities are most evident. Through sustainable urban planning, innovative architecture and advanced technologies, we can bridge these gaps and create inclusive spaces for all communities'.
The first panel, with Stefano Minini (Project Director - Science & Technology, Europe) and Zen Mumtaz (Socio-Economic Development Manager), both experts from Lendlease, explored the impact of urban design and regeneration, focusing in particular on the design of public spaces that meet the needs of different communities public spaces that meet the needs of different communities. The speakers discussed the Milan Innovation District model in Italy and the Stratford Cross project in London, two key examples of how design, by stimulating innovation, can also improve the quality of life in urban neighbourhoods and foster social integration.
The second panel, with the participation of Giulio Antonutto (Associate Director, Computational Design Skills Network Leader) and Daniel Portilla (Associate, Masterplanning & Urban Design) from Arup, focused on the impact of digital technologies, especially artificial intelligence, in transforming the very concept of urban design. It was emphasised how the use of technologies such as digital twins, data analysis and AI are optimising urban design, improving the quality of infrastructure and responding more effectively to social and environmental challenges.
Finally, architect Lorenzo Palmeri delved into the topic of ecological sustainability, noting how design and eco-sustainability are destined to continue their journey together, essential elements for a more responsible future.
