Senator Antonio Razzi, an
often-lampooned political figure with former premier Silvio
Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party, on Saturday
announced his candidacy for Rome mayor.
"Enough with this squalid spectacle that we've been
watching... I'm completely disgusted by all these disputes," he
said in reference to divisions among rightwing candidates.
Razzi, 68, is from the region of Abruzzo and his public
speaking gaffes have been made famous in impersonations by comic
Maurizio Crozza.
In two of the more well-known episodes, Razzi once called
North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un "a democrat" and voted in
favour of a law to re-open brothels because he said prostitutes
create traffic jams.
He also once compared Rome to North Korea: "You can go
there (North Korea) without worry, no one touches you. It's not
like Rome. It's possibly the safest nation I know of".
