The Rome ministers' tribunal on
Friday shelved the cases against former health ministers Roberto
Speranza, Beatrice Lorenzin and Giulia Grillo in relation to how
COVID-19 was handled and Italy's readiness for a pandemic of its
kind.
Speranza was health minister when the pandemic erupted in 2020
and he stayed in the job until last year.
Grillo was his immediate predecessor and Lorenzin was health
minister before her.
The decision by the tribunal means that the three ministers will
not to face criminal charges over COVID-19.
Earlier this month a court in Brescia shelved a separate
investigation into Speranza and former premier Giuseppe Conte
over the management the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic
on Italy.
That case regarded the decision not to extend an initial
lockdown to some areas around Bergamo and allegations this
caused unwarranted deaths.
Conte and Speranza said they acted in accordance with the
available scientific data and the opinions of experts.
