Opposition 5-Star Movement (M5S) and
ex premier Giuseppe Conte on Wednesday accused Justice Minister
Carlo Nordio of "speaking as an absolver" of wanted alleged war
criminal Osama Almasri after the minister justified the
government's freeing him despite an International Criminal Court
warrant and sending him back to Libya last month.
Almasri is wanted by the ICC for allegedly murdering and raping
migrants, some as young as five, at a Tripoli detention centre
that is allegedly key to efforts to stop people heading for a
better life in Europe via Italy.
"We have become the free port and the criminals' playland.
Nordio was scandalous (on Almasri), you did not speak as
Almasri's defense lawyer but as an absolver judge! You should be
ashamed", said the two-time ex premier and M5S leader.
"Do you really think that all Italians are idiots?", he added.
