Taxing large concentrations of wealth should be on the agenda at the international level, Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein said on Friday.
"The issue of taxing big patrimonies cannot be taboo, at least at the European or international level," the leader of a centre-left opposition party told a round table organized by the Treccani institute.
"I take as my own the proposal made by (Brazilian President) Lula.
"But the debate must be held at least at the European level, because it is more effective to intervene at that level".
Ex-premier Giuseppe Conte, the leader of the 5-Star Movement (M5S) who also took part in the round table, echoed those comments, while raising the issue of the difficulties in applying wealth taxes.
"There is no doubt that we need a fairer system with regards to taxation," he said. "We cannot allow wealth to be concentrated in the hands of a few, parasitic (individuals).
"But we must be careful with financial wealth that travels on networks, because it is wealth that can be transferred to more beneficial environments at any time.
"This is why it must be done at a global level, or at least the European one.
"It is not just a problem of fiscal fairness but also of the quality of democracy". (ANSA.
