The Greek parliament failed to
elect a new president in the second of four voting rounds,
according to the daily Kathimerini. Konstantinos Tasoulas, the
conservative government's nominee, received 160 votes, 40 less
than the 200 required for an outright victory. Tasoulas received
the same number of votes in the first round, on January 25.
Louka Katseli, backed by leftist SYRIZA and the New Left Party,
received 40 votes, while Tasos Giannitsis, supported by the main
PASOK opposition, received 34. The far-right Niki party's
candidate, Kostas Kyriakou, received 14 votes.
