It is not in the powers of the head of
the Higher Health Institute (ISS) to adopt plans against a
pandemic like COVID-19, the ISS said Thursday amid reports its
president, Silvio Brusaferro, allegedly hampered the adoption of
such a plan when the virus broke out in northern Italy in early
2020.
"It is not within the powers of the President of the Institute
to adopt pandemic plans or to implement them," the ISS said in a
statement.
The ISS said it was commenting on "what has been reported in the
press according to which the President of the Istituto Superiore
di Sanità, Silvio Brusaferro, prevented the adoption of the
pandemic plan.
"The line followed by the Institute, on the instructions of its
President, during the entire period of the pandemic and from the
very beginning, has been marked by the utmost precaution and
scientific rigour," the note said.
