The events organised by the Italian Embassy in Dakar to promote and strengthen collaboration and partnership between institutions in Italy and Senegal that are engaged in education, research and health surveillance in the poultry sector have come to an end, a statement from the Italian Embassy in Dakar said.
The Italian Embassy in Dakar wanted to explore the challenges and opportunities of the poultry sector in Senegal and contribute to its growth with scientific diplomacy events prepared by scientific attaché Eugenio Cavallo. Achille Schiavone, professor of the Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Turin, a specialist in animal nutrition, and Salvatore Catania of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie, an expert in mycoplasmosis, a particularly dangerous disease in poultry breeding that can produce significant economic losses, were invited to make their contributions.
Together with the Senegal Veterinary Medical Association, a seminar was organised on nutrition and diseases in poultry breeding. On this occasion, Catania described sustainable methods to reduce the occurrence of mycoplasmosis, while Schiavone illustrated the potential of insect larvae, as an alternative to imported protein meal, for feeding chickens and hens. The two Italian specialists contributed to strengthening the scientific partnership and cooperation in higher education and research between Senegal and Italy, meeting with colleagues from the Laboratoire National de l'Élevage et de Recherches Vétérinaires and lecturing to students from the École Inter-États des Sciences et Médecine Vétérinaires in Dakar. Finally, the experts visited a broiler farm, noting the high standards adopted in its management.
As emphasised again by the Italian Embassy in Dakar, the realisation of these scientific diplomacy events highlights Italy's desire to share knowledge in a sector, that of poultry farming, which is growing rapidly in the country and is fundamental for advancing production and achieving food self-sufficiency, generating jobs and guaranteeing a prosperous and sustainable future for Senegal.
