On the occasion of Nave Amerigo Vespucci's stopover in Alexandria, Egypt, two events will be held today to promote the candidature of Italian cuisine as a Unesco intangible heritage and the culture of Italy. Sources on the spot report this, relaunching an announcement made this week.
Welcomed by the Commander of the Vespucci, Giuseppe Lai, and the Ambassador of Italy to Egypt, Michele Quaroni, the Italian Navy's historic training ship will be attended tonight by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests (Masaf), Francesco Lollobrigida, and the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli.
Already in the afternoon, 'Vespucci meets Egypt', a cultural and food and wine event organised by Masaf and the Ministry of Culture, with the support of the Italian Embassy, the Ice Agency, and the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo, is scheduled.
A selection of passages by Giuseppe Ungaretti and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, both born in Alexandria, Egypt, will first be read by Italian poet, writer and playwright Davide Rondoni and Egyptian actress Fatma Adel.
Afterwards there will be a recital by soprano Fiorenza Mercatali, tenor Paolo Mascari and Egyptian opera singer Gala El Hadidi, accompanied on the piano by Maestro Francesco De Poli.
In the evening, on board the Vespucci, awards will be presented to 'Ambassadors of Italian Quality in the World' during a gala dinner dedicated to the Unesco nomination of Italian cuisine.
Also expected at the quay are 250 students from the "Don Bosco" Institute of Alexandria, which Ungaretti attended during his childhood.
During the afternoon event, space will also be given to gastronomic excellence with a tasting of 'Farmers Market' ice cream, a project by Masaf that has just been launched in Alexandria with Filiera Italia.
