Italy, on the occasion of the 10th session of the United Nations Working Group on Security in the Field of Information and Communication Technologies, organised an event in New York dedicated to the theme "Quantum Technology and Cyber Security: Opportunities and Challenges".
The Farnesina is at the forefront in promoting strong international action to protect global security, including in the strategic area of new technologies. With the increasing integration of digital systems into everyday life, cyber security is a key priority for governments, industries and individuals. In addition, the advent of quantum technology presents significant opportunities, but also formidable challenges, with cybersecurity implications that demand great attention from the international community.
The United Nations has proclaimed 2025 as the 'International Year of Quantum Science and Technology'. The event, organised by the Italian Representation at the UN Headquarters, was opened with a speech by the Italian Permanent Representative, Ambassador Maurizio Massari, followed by contributions from experts from the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN), the UN Science, Technology and International Security Unit, and the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), moderated by Minister Tajani's Special Envoy for Cybersecurity and Head of the Farnesina's Technological Innovation Unit, Diego Brasioli.
The meeting was co-sponsored with Ghana, demonstrating Italy's commitment to collaborating with the countries of the African continent in the spirit of partnership pursued with the Mattei Plan, to jointly address the growing challenges in the digital space.
