The 9th edition of the Italian Design Day in the World was held today at Baku's Ada University. In line with the theme of this year's event, 'Inequalities - Design for a Better Life', the Italian Embassy in Baku, in collaboration with the local Ice Office, Ada University and the Politecnico di Milano, organised a conference to highlight the potential of territories as drivers of sustainable development.
In his institutional greeting, Ambassador Luca Di Gianfrancesco recalled the importance of the Italian-Azerbaijani University as an engine of bilateral cooperation and appreciated the work done by the Milan Polytechnic in launching the first degree courses of the Faculty of Architecture and Design in cooperation with Ada. As an example of successful cooperation between Italy and Azerbaijan, the Ambassador praised the experience of Simmetrico Network in the country and, at the same time, underlined the important role of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in strengthening cultural relations, most recently by promoting Azerbaijan's participation in the next Venice Architecture Biennial.
In a context characterised by increasing tourist flows and business opportunities between Italy and Azerbaijan, the Ambassador also invited the participants to take advantage of the direct Baku-Milan air connections (operating four times a week) to visit the 63rd edition of the Salone del Mobile in Milan and the 24th International Triennale Exhibition, whose theme centred on design as a tool to promote a better life also inspired the Italian Design in the World exhibition. The Vice-Chancellor of Ada, Fariz Ismailzade, and the Director of the School of Design and Architecture, Silvia Ferraris, then took the floor to enhance the collaboration within the framework of the Italian-Azerbaijani University.
A number of lecturers representing the Departments of Architecture and Design of the Politecnico di Milano then took the floor, together with the President and Creative Director of Simmetrico Network, Daniele Zambelli, who was recently awarded a prize by the State Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning of Azerbaijan for the Victory Park and Museum project in Baku in the category of the best cultural and religious architecture works, and Rena Mammadova of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, who illustrated the Foundation's projects in Azerbaijan and abroad.
