Marcello Apicella took office today as Italian Ambassador to Bulgaria.
Born in Naples on 10 June 1964, he graduated in Law at the University of Naples in 1990. On 3 July 1995, he was appointed as a Volunteer in the diplomatic career. After an initial assignment at the Ministry's General Directorate for Emigration and Social Affairs, he became Consul in Split in 1999. In 2003, he was appointed Consul at the Consulate General of Italy in Paris.
In 2007, he returned to the Farnesina to take up service at the Directorate General for Personnel. In 2010, he was First Counsellor for Emigration and Social Affairs at the Italian Embassy in Buenos Aires, and subsequently held the post of Minister Counsellor at the same Embassy.
In 2015, he was appointed Ambassador of Italy in Panama, with accreditation also in Basseterre (St. Kitts and Nevis), Port au Prince (Haiti), Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and Saint John's (Antigua and Barbuda).
Since 2019, he has been serving at the Council of State as Diplomatic Adviser to the President.
In 2017, he was awarded the Official Knighthood of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
