by Domitilla Conte (ANSA-AFP) - BUCAREST, 10 MAR - Romania risks plunging into chaos after the latest stop to far-right leader Calin Georgescu's candidacy in the May 4 presidential race.A "no" badly digested by his supporters, who immediately after the electoral commission's decision took to the streets facing police tear gas, and also by some quarters of the international far right.
Even Elon Musk took to the field on social media, calling Georgescu's exclusion from the presidential election "madness." Calin Gorgescu, Romania's far-right leader, had won the first round of the November 24 presidential election, which was annulled by the Constitutional Court two days before the December 8 runoff due to a series of irregularities in the financing of his campaign, with allegations of Russian interference in his favor that also led to the removal as 'persona non grata' of some diplomats.
By the end of February, Georgescu had been detained by police and questioned by judges, who placed him under investigation on heavy charges, including attack on the constitutional order, making false statements about the financing of his election campaign, and establishing an organization of a fascist, racist and xenophobic character.
Nevertheless, he had decided to resubmit his candidacy. Now the Election Commission rejected the request, stating that it had adopted "the rejection of the registration of Mr. Georgescu Calin's independent candidacy in the elections" without specifying the reasons.Soon after, several hundred Georgescu supporters gathered in front of the Election Commission headquarters and police dispersed them using tear gas.
Georgescu, who has always denied any ties to Moscow and may still appeal to the Constitutional Court, meanwhile protested his exclusion with a post on X, calling it "a direct blow to democracy in the world." "Europe is now a dictatorship," he adds, "Romania is living under tyranny! Many interventions on social media in his favor, including the eminent one by Elon Musk."This is crazy," a folly, for the Doge's leader, to exclude Calin Georgescu from the elections in Romania.Musk reposted some tweets on the subject, accompanying them with brief comments.Among others, they state that "democracy is officially dead in Romania and the European Union." In another post re-posted by Musk signed Mario Nawfal, it is stated that there is "a Soros-backed NGO behind the censure of Georgescu," and Musk comments, "Soros again...." (ANSA-AFP).
