Last night in Novi Sad, Serbia,
students blocked a nightlife street in the city center to
protest an alleged beating of their colleagues by activists from
SNS, the majority party of President Aleksandar Vucic.
The students said the street will remain blocked until 3 a.m.
"No fun tonight, only noise," they said as they arrived with a
chorus of whistles and vuvuzelas.
This initiative was contested by Interior Ministry and police
force, who flatly denied the version of the assault suffered by
the students. According to the Interior Ministry, a colossal
brawl between young people under the influence of alcohol, some
of whom sustained injuries, allegedly took place at the location
indicated for the alleged assault instead. In support of the
students in Novi Sad there were demonstrations and processions
of their colleagues in Belgrade and Kragujevac earlier in the
day, with temporary roadblocks.
