Sergio Mattarella, the Italian
President of the Republic, stated in Gorizia while accepting the
Santi Ilario and Taziano prize, "It is to the citizens of these
lands that we owe the success of this path: mature society,
grown in democracy, with effective antibodies compared to
flattering of sterile and dangerous nationalisms that have
caused many serious damage."
"I am extremely pleased to have the opportunity to share
this prize with Borut Pahor, and, above all, to share a trait of
walking in the commitment to friendship between our two
countries," he noted. "The experiences we have encountered are
not only a civic and institutional obligation to our respective
peoples, but also a dutiful responsibility for the establishment
of a peaceful future for our continent. The dangerous
alternative to this project, Italy, Europe known in all its
drama," Mattarella added.
