A major international opera event
will bring Europe without borders to the stage on Thursday, June
19, and Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Transalpina Square in
Gorizia on the occasion of Nova Gorica and Gorizia European
Capital of Culture 2025. For two evenings, Gioachino Rossini's
"Journey to Rheims," a work less performed than others by the
composer from Pesaro, will be staged. The initiative was
presented today at a press conference at the Fvg Region
headquarters. The performance will transform the square into
an open-air theater with an international cast and a
co-production between Piccolo Opera Festival and SNG Opera in
Balet Ljubljana, with the collaboration of Rossini Opera
Festival and GO! Borderless Opera Lab.
"Rossini is a symbol of a Europe united in culture, and this
evocative and evocative production perfectly embodies the
spirit, exactly 200 years after the first performance,"
explained Gabriele Ribis, artistic director of the Piccolo Opera
Festival. Featuring artists from Italy, Chile, Austria,
France, Spain, Slovenia, Kazakhstan and Georgia, to name a few,
the opera will be a musical journey without borders, as is the
spirit of GO!2025 between Fvg and Slovenia. "Being the first
European capital of cross-border culture means paving the way
for a new model of cooperation. Culture becomes a tool to break
down barriers, promoting a future of peace, brotherhood and
cooperation. This is the challenge and the legacy they want to
leave behind," Ribis added. Throughout the staging, images
will be a key element telling a journey through time: from the
19th century, a time of great cultural ferment at the end of the
Enlightenment, to a vision of the contemporary in which culture
is collectively constructed. The event will also be an immersive
experience, alternating between real and digital sets. For those
who choose the railway as a means of transportation, the opera
will begin during the journey: on board the historic train that
will connect Pordenone and Trieste to Gorizia for the occasion,
there will be animations, a prelude to Rossini's journey. "Not
just an opera, but a message of unity and the future," concluded
Marko Hribernik, superintendent of the Ljubljana National Opera
and Ballet Theater.
