The Serbian Parliament, convened
today for a vote of confidence in the new government of Prime
Minister-in-Charge Djuro Macut, adjourned the continuation of
its work until tomorrow, with debate resuming after Macut's
keynote address. As was expected, the day was marked by a clash
in the courtroom between representatives of the majority and
opposition, who did not spare themselves in accusations and
counter-accusations, in some cases even on a personal level.
Heated tones, which, however, did not degenerate into physical
confrontations, as happened a few weeks ago. On voting in favor
of the new government there is no doubt, as the renewed
governing coalition between conservatives Sns, socialists Sps
and other minor formations can count on a large majority. During
the debate, candidate for the post of new minister of education
Dejan Vuk Stankovic - present in the courtroom with all the
other future new ministers - fell ill and was promptly rescued.
He returned shortly afterwards, stating that it was a physical
and emotional reaction to the excessive stress and the harsh
lynching and hate campaign being waged against him. According to
the law, the new government must take office by April 18 (30
days after parliament found that the previous executive had
resigned at the end of January), failing which it goes to early
elections in early June.
