Mads Pedersen won the fifth stage of
the Giro d'Italia from Ceglie Messapica to Matera, 151
kilometers long. The Dane, with his third stage win, kept the
pink jersey.
In the sprint to the finish line in Matera, Pedersen beat a
surprising Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain Victorious) by a whisker.
Third place for Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling). Tomorrow is the
sixth stage from Potenza to Naples, 227 kilometers long.
"It was really, really tough. In the last 20 kilometers, some
uphill, I had to fight a lot but the team was fantastic", said
Pedersen to Rai Sport, after extensing his contract with
Lidl-Trek.
"I came to the Giro to win as much as possible. They pay my
salary, so I tried to arrive in the best shape and I try to win
as many stages as possible and keep the pink jersey as long as
possible". Tomorrow is the longest stage of the 2025 Giro..
Pedersen has already won in the Campania capital in 2023.
"Two years ago it was very nice, let's see if it happens again
tomorrow, but now let's enjoy this victory".
