Centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein on Wednesday accused Premier Giorgia Meloni of putting a tax on healthcare in Italy and said the premier and leader of the rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party should be ashamed.
"I don't know how long it's been since she went to a hospital.
When she was in government, you put a cap on hospital hiring.
People can't get treatment, she should be ashamed!", Schlein said in her reply to the prime minister's question time statements. "You want healthcare that fits people's wallets" and this is a "real Meloni tax, getting treatment has become a luxury". "In all this, there are those who make money with private clinics.
"For her, if something doesn't work, it's always someone else's fault" but "after three years there are no excuses, it's her fault and Italians are not fools", she added.
The 2025 budget has allocated unprecedented funds for the national health service, the government says.
