Romanian Premier Victor
Ponta and his entire cabinet resigned on Wednesday following
protests over Friday's fire at a disco in the capital in which
32 people died and 180 were injured.
Cristian Popescu Piedone, the mayor of the Bucharest
municipality where the disco is located, also resigned on
Wednesday.
"I take moral responsibility," he said.
The resignations followed mass protests in the capital and
other cities on Tuesday evening.
The protests coincided with the funeral of a 36-year-old
blogger and photographer, Claudiu Petre, who died trying to save
a woman from the fire.
On Tuesday evening Romanian President Klaus Iohannis backed
the protesters.
"Someone has to take political responsibility," he wrote on
his Facebook profile.
"The next step must be taken by politicians who cannot
ignore this sentiment of revolt."
On Monday police arrested one of the people in charge of
the disco on manslaughter charges for failing to guarantee the
necessary safety measures.
