Sinner will face Casper Ruud or Jaume Munar in the Italian Open
quarter-finals after coming through a tough test to beat
Argentine Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 on Tuesday and
progress from the fourth round.
The 23-year-old, who is back in action in Rome after a
three-month suspension for a doping offence, was especially
resilient in the first set, when clay-court specialist Cerundolo
frequently put him under pressure on his serve.
Fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti is also in the last-eight after
beating Daniil Medvedev 7-5 6-4, with a rain delay making him
wait three hours to win the decisive match point.
In the women's singles, Italy's Jasmine Paolini beat Diana
Shnaider 6-7 (1/7), 6-4 to reach the semi-finals.
