Lawyers representing the associations
who challenged a decision by the Abruzzo regional government to
authorize the cull of 469 deer, including 142 fawns, declared
victory on Wednesday.
The August 8 regional resolution authorizing the cull during the
2024-2025 hunting season due to the animals' impact on
agriculture was initially suspended, pending a ruling, after the
associations presented their appeal against it last year.
But when the Abruzzo regional administrative court finally came
to look at the case on its merits on Wednesday, it said there
was nothing to rule on as the 2024-2025 hunting season ended in
March.
"The deer cull did not happen," said Michele Pezone, one of the
lawyers involved in the battle against the regional government's
decision.
"This is the real thing to stress and it is a victory for us
regardless".
