Italy will not recall its ambassador to Israel as it seeks to further Middle East peace efforts despite pursuing a critical dialogue with the Jewish state, Premier Giorgia Meloni told question time in the House Wednesday answering a question from Angelo Bonelli of the Green-Left Alliance (AVS) on the crisis in Gaza.
"I am convinced, on the basis of the numerous conversations I have had in recent months with the leaders of the Region, that we can work on a regional political and security framework capable of putting an end to the conflict, paving the way for a process that leads to the two-state solution, and I remain convinced that to do so we must start from the reconstruction plan proposed by the Arab countries," she said.
"It is towards this objective that the government continues to commit itself, working with the leaders of the Region, with our European partners, with the United States.
"We will do so by maintaining an open, frank and, if necessary, critical dialogue with everyone. And this is exactly why it is not the intention of the Italian government to recall the Italian ambassador to Israel".
