Federica Pellegrini
hinted that she may retire from swimming after failing to win a
medal in the final of the 200 metres freestyle at the Rio
Olympics.
"Perhaps it's time to change life," said the 28-year-old,
a four-time world champion and the winner of gold in the same
event at the 2008 Olympics, in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
Pellegrini narrowly missed out on bronze, coming fourth in
a race won by Katie Ledecky of the United States, with a time of
1'55''18.
She said that was feeling pain "the likes of which I felt
few times previously". Premier Matteo Renzi sought to console
Pellegrini. "Shame about #Rio2016," Renzi said via Twitter. "But
thanks from the bottom of the heart to Federica Pellegrini, one
of the best athletes of all time".
